Alcala: PH on track for rice self-sufficiency The DA on Thursday said that it remains on track with its rice self-sufficiency target this year, and appealed not to equate sufficiency with zero imports. DA Sec. Alcala said that this year, the DA’s efforts are geared towards increasing palay production to about 20MMT, in line with the Food Staples Sufficiency Program (FSSP). Alcala’s statement was contrary to those blurted by Palace spokesman Lacierda during a press conference. The DA chief explained that the government’s planned importation of 187,000 metric tons this year as buffer stock for the lean months should not be equated with rice self-sufficiency. |
