DA to launch drought-tolerant rice farming project in Bicol

A P6-M upland rice farming project in the Bicol region that will capitalize on native drought-tolerant rice varieties will soon be implemented by the DA.  The two-and-a-half-year project is also expected to boost Bicol’s contribution to the national rice production.  Bicol used to account for a hefty 20% of Philippine rice output.

Speedy action on Quinta-hit areas in region 6 urged

The Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (RDRMMC) has passed a resolution requesting Pres. Aquino to declare a state of calamity in areas of Western Visayas adversely affected by typhoon Quinta.   The initial consolidated report prepared by the RDRRMC showed that damage wrought by the typhoon to rice, corn, high-value crops especially vegetables and livestock have reached P62M, the bulk of which is accounted for by the staple crop valued at P43M.

A P5-M community farmers’ program in Oriental Mindoro seeks to propagate a giant Zamboanga-native mud crab species, which potentially raise the country’s $60M mud crab export. BFAR-Mimaropa Regional Fisheries Research and Development Center said they are looking at stocking gravid crabs in mangrove areas, adopting the sea ranching concept from the harvest in January.

Bicol university develops new beekeeping technique

The Central Bicol State University of Agriculture’s Regional Apiculture Center in Pili has developed a new technique for commercial beekeeping aimed at increasing beekeper’s income and made available to budding meliponiculturists.  The technique was made part for the country’s apiculture industry that the National Apiculture Research, Training and Development Institute (Nartdi) is promoting.  The roadmap, based on the intention of DA Sec. Alcala of integrating beekeeping in the country’s farming systems, covers a five-year period (2013-1017) with a proposed budget of P500B.

Govt asks LGUs to conserve biodiversity

The Protected Areas and Wildlife Bureau asked local government units to participate in the Biodiversity Partnerships Project in drawing up policies that will protect endangered or critical species in their areas.    Before the program expires by 2016, LGUs should be able to create ordinances that will protect the agriculture landscapes and tourism spots in the country.  The program also seeks to strengthen partnerships between the Housing and Land Use Regulatory Board; the Agriculture, Local Government and Trade Departments; NGOs; as well as the League of Provinces, Cities and Municipalities.
