Rice self-sufficiency by 2013 a dream – govt think tank

Government think tank Philippine Institute for Development Studies (PIDS) has poured cold water on the DA’s program top make the country self-sufficient in rice by 2013.  To achieve the zero-importation goal by next year, PIDS said budget allocation for the DA has been increased to P55B for 2013, compared to P33M in 2010. PIDS senior research fellow Roehlano Briones said the only way to achieve rice self-sufficiency is to increase import barriers and that the goal of rice self-sufficiency should not be equated to zero imports.

New policy reduces sales of meat traders

Meat traders said Tuesday the implementation of a new meat policy that imposes double standards on frozen and fresh meats affected their profit margins in 2012.  The DA earlier issued AO 6, which prohibits the display of imported frozen meat on meat stands in the wet markets.  Sellers of imported frozen meat are required to have a chiller where the frozen products should be kept for hygienic purposes. Meanwhile, AO 5 regulated the conduct of sale of fresh meats in the wet markets.  They said that while AO 6 is an improvement of AO 22, AO 5 is not consumer-oriented and tend to be more favorable to local hog producers.
