Agriculture Secretary Proceso J. Alcala holds newly-harvested pechay during the launching of the Agri-Pinoy Urban Agriculture Program at Brgy. UP Campus, Diliman, Quezon City , last October 31, 2012. In his speech, Alcala encouraged urban dwellers especially the youth to take part and revive community vegetable gardening in the metropolis via the Urban Agri Program as part of the government’s effort to lessen rice consumption. To effectively implement the program, the Department of Agriculture awarded to each of the congressional districts of Metro Manila: 1 unit Greenhouse, 1 unit shredding machine, 1 unit grass cutter, 1 unit knapsack sprayer, 10 cu. m. garden soil, 10 sets garden tools, 40 bags of organic fertilizer (vermicast), 5 kgs. assorted vegetable seeds, and 30 pcs. assorted fruit tree seedlings.
