Agriculture Undersecretary Bernadette Romulo-Puyat recently received 800 metric tons (MT) or 16,000 bags of rice donated by the Peoples’ Republic of China thru the ASEAN Plus Tree Emergency Rice Reserve (APTERR) at the National Food Authority (NFA) warehouse in North Reclamation Area, Cebu City.

The donated rice was turned-over to Dept. of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Regional Director Mercedita Jabagat for distribution to the earthquake and Typhoon Yolanda victims in Bohol and Cebu that hit the country last year.

Puyat, who delivered the message of Agriculture Secretary Proceso Alcala, said the donation was timely and heart warming as the victims are still recovering from the devastation brought by the two calamities. Bohol will receive 500 MT (10,000 bags) while Cebu will receive 300 MT (6,000 bags) of rice.

Nongnoch Deetae, General Manager of APTERR, expressed sympathy for the devastations brought by the two calamities. Accepting these gifts from China, APTERR looks forward to the renewed confidence of the people affected by the said calamities.

Also present during the turn-over were National Food Authority Administrator Ludovico Jarina, First Secretary of the Embassy of China in the Philippines Zhang Huaying, Director of International Cooperation of the Ministry of Agriculture in China Ye Anping, officials from NFA, DSWD, DA-7 and local officials of Cebu Province.
