organic livestockRecent training on organic agriculture entices some 50 participants to implement their learning.

According to Wilberto Castillo, alternate focal person on Organic Agriculture (OA) of the Department of Agriculture (DA RFO 7), the subjects they learned were eye-openers to the participants who had been practicing inorganic farming.

Alejandro Oliva, 42 years old of Barili, Cebu, said that he had been farming for 17 years using strong chemicals to ward off insects. He added he began to feel the effect of the said chemicals with frequent bouts of headache and dizziness. Oliva vowed to shift from inorganic to organic farming after the training.

Another participant, Roland Saldua, 29 years old, employed by a chain of resorts, was sent by the company to learn on organic agriculture. He said that the growing demand of organic food among hotel guests pushed the owner to establish an organic garden in the resort.

Castillo said that this is the first time where the training on organic crops is integrated with organic livestock, an added feature for the participants.

Hands-on preparation on organic fertilizer and pesticides using indigenous materials were among the subjects discussed on the five-day training at the Binhi sa Panginabuhian Training Center in Maribojoc, Bohol.
