The Department of Agriculture Region 7 (DA RFO-7) encourages people to adopt organic gardening in their backyards to help mitigate the effects of climate change and to uplift their economic status.

In a forum of government information officers, Ronnie Jamola, of DA-7, said that the DA is currently supporting the Local Government Units (LGUs) by providing them with organic seeds and fertilizers, and is encouraging composting by interested community. He added for example that Mandaue City has already established around 7,000 backyard gardens.

Jamola explained that the DA has showcased organically grown plants, vegetables and herbs in its facility in Subangdaku, Mandaue City, as learning and viewing site for the public.

He added that vegetables garden contributes to food production and security and decreases malnutrition. It likewise mitigates the effects of climate change by greening the environment. It also provides alternative income for the masses. ---Germelina S. Lauron, CTU DevCOm Intern, DA RAFIS.
