The DA is currently wrapping up in Cebu Province the last leg of the regional information caravan on El Nińo preparedness.

Undertaken with the DA attached agencies, private sector, and the Regional Agricultural and Fisheries Council (RAFC), the caravan earlier took off from Canlaon City in Negros Oriental where the city’s executive, Mayor Jimmie Jaime Clerigo, committed to prepare his city’s populace against the weather phenomenon. There were six cities and 22 municipalities covered in the Negros Oriental leg of the information caravan. The second leg undertaken at Bohol Province, covered the city of Tagbilaran and 46 municipalities.

Led by OIC RTD Joel Elumba, the information caravan features brief stop in every municipality or city to brief the local executive or his representative and the agriculture workers of DA’s El Nińo mitigation measures which can be availed of by the municipality or local government unit. According to Elumba, DA’s mitigation plan includes positioning of drought-tolerant seeds of rice, corn and vegetables; availability of water pumps, Artificial Insemination (AI) and livestock breeder assistance, among others.

The information caravan has been one of the activities undertaken in compliance of Agriculture Secretary Proceso Alcala’s directive for the DA regional offices to undertake advocacy campaigns to lessen the effects of the El Nino anticipated in the third quarter of this year. The activity was also one of the measures agreed by the DA 7 Regional Management Council chaired by OIC Director Angel Enriquez to mitigate the impact of El Niño should it hit Central Visayas.
