organic agri2Farmers are  encouraged to practice organic agriculture.

This was the statement of Felipe Apale, Department of Agriculture–7’s alternate Focal Person on Organic Agriculture during the recent Kapihan sa PIA.

DA is implementing Republic Act No. 10068, otherwise known as the Organic Agriculture Act of 2010, which promotes organic agriculture.  It aims to rehabilitate the soil condition, prevent the depletion of natural resources, and protect the health of farmers and consumers in the process while giving rise on productivity and food security.

Apale  said that only  few farmers in the region adopt and practice organic agriculture. He said OA reconciles with the green revolution as it relies on  biodiversity and production of micro-organisms  beneficial to the ecosystems and humans.

Also, complementing the Organic Agriculture is the Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) of the Bureau of Agriculture and Fishery Products Standards (BAFPS), which regulates the use of inorganic farm inputs such as chemical fertilizers  and pesticides.

All local government units in Siquijor and some in Bohol and Negros Oriental have finally passed ordinances to implement the  organic agriculture law. (Lolita Maramara – RAFIS)
