Farmers in Southwestern Cebu Receive Goat Project
The Department of Agriculture–7 (DA–7) distributed some 80 female goats or does for farmers in the municipalities of Dumanjug, Moalboal, Badian, Alegria, Alcantara and Malabuyoc, Cebu Province.
A Memorandum of Agreement was signed between DA–7 and the recipients of the goat project.
During the ceremonial turnover held at Dumanjug, DA–7 OIC–Regional Technical Director Joel Elumba, said the goat dispersal project is a fulfilment of the commitment of Agriculture Secretary Proceso Alcala for the provinces, as part of the Livestock Productivity Enhancement Program to achieve food security and generate additional income for the farmers.
The recipients were Delia Pasignasigna, Bernardino Ewican, Hermiehildo Ydemmie, Nelson Alquilos, Cesario Casag, Amparo Rendon and Zachary Beltran of Dumanjug; Pertito Banogbanog, Flavio Banaay, Aresnio Asentista, Ernesto Asentista and Abdon Pantajo of Moalboal; Rique Lendio, Danilo Aying, Agustin Homecillo, Quitin Jayno and Eleuterio Letegio of Alegria; Crescente Sameon, Oscar Belandres, Maria Quilestino, Loreto Elegino and Victor Costanilla of Badian;Jiony Corgio, Ricardo Corgio, Llomingo Gabales, Emerito Yosores and Francisco Saurnido of Alcantara; Analien Niaga, Edwin Tiofelo, Rosendo Cardeno, Leandro Baynosa and Virginia Balansag of Malabuyoc.
Elumba said Central Visayas has the 2nd largest population in terms of goat inventory in the country, and the Province of Cebu ranks the 5th highest in the inventory of swine nationwide.
Cebu Vice-Governor Agnes Magpale expressed her gratitude to DA for the assistance provided to the farming constituents of the province. She said every household in the rural barangays of Cebu has farm animals, adding that she also owns 4 cows, being a member of a farmers’ cooperative.
Elumba advised the recipients to start breeding their goats once these are on estrus, and provide necessary shedhouses to protect the animals from rains and bad weather conditions.
He added that DA will continue to monitor and evaluate the status and performance of the dispersed animals, and assist the local government units through trainings and seminars. (Lolita Maramara – RAFIS).
