SAAD Conducts Dragon Fruit Training

Dragon fruit is one of the identified projects for implementation in Siquijor under the Department of Agriculture’s Special Area for Agricultural Development (SAAD) program.

The province is one of the SAAD’s identified provinces aims to alleviate poverty in the poorest provinces of the country through provision of agricultural and related interventions for the farming and fisheries sector.

During the training on Dragon Fruit Production Technology, Bernadith Bunado, Agricultural Provincial Coordinating Officer (APCO) of Siquijor, said that dragon fruit is easy to produce as it doesn’t need much water. Bunado said dragon fruit has high market demand. “I hope that you (farmer beneficiaries) will have to sustain the production so you can boost the dragon fruit industry of the province.”

Mr. Orlando T. Am-is, the newly elected President of the Dragon Fruit Pioneer Producers Association of Siquijor said that he is grateful to the DA-7 and is very positive that they will be able to sustain the dragon fruit production to address the need of the local markets.

The association will receive dragon fruit seedlings, concrete posts, plastic drums with cover, sprinklers, and heavy duty bolos worth Php 11, 488, 318.00 in total.
