Around 200 corn farmers and technicians have attended the ongoing 3rd Regional Corn and Cassava Congress held in a resort in San Remigio, Cebu.

Starting on January 23 to 25, 2019, the congress will tackle the status of corn industry in the region. Lectures on corn product utilization, improvement and mechanization are part of the event, aside from the corn technology demonstration contest.

DA7 Regional Executive Director Atty. Salvador Diputado emphasized the use of corn technology to increase the corn yield. He added that farmers must be educated on the newly developed corn varieties that are resistant to pest and diseases and weather resilient.

Mayor Mariano Martinez on the same note shares that corn is very important in Cebu because it serves as a staple for majority of Cebuanos, hence the need to increase its corn areas.

‘Cebu Provincial Government has allocated about P48 million funds for the corn-based Farmer Scientist Training Program (FSTP),’ says Dr. Roldan Saragena, Cebu Provincial Agriculturist. He also shares how the Cebu PA created an online platform that will assist corn farmers in the marketing of their products, among others.

“This congress is a revival of the usual corn congress before, in order to enhance camarederie, and to promote better corn project implementation among the LGUs”, says the regional corn coordinator Engr. Edna Yu.

Congress participants are coming from the 4 provinces of Central Visayas. It is hosted by the Municipality of San Remigio and facilitated by Corn Program of the Department of Agriculture 7.
