While the Philippine weather bureau has yet to issue an official advisory about a looming El Niño phenomenon particular to the Central Visayas region, the Department of Agriculture 7 has already taken measures to caution its impact on the farming sector.

The weather bureau’s el niño probabilistic outlook page as of February 14, 2019 reported that weak el niño conditions are present and are expected to continue at the northern hemisphere spring (March-May 2019). The said condition might bring various impacts including damage to crops.

With this development, DA7 Regional Executive Director Atty. Salvador D. Diputado has reactivated the El Niño Quick Response Team (El Niño Task Force) of the agency. The team which includes the Agriculture Programs Coordinating Officers (APCO) of Bohol, Cebu, Siquijor and Negros Oriental will conduct a regular monitoring in their respective provinces and submit a weekly situationer for possible el niño.

“Inventory of the drought-resistant vegetable seeds and the conduct of el niño information campaign are among the planned measures to be undertaken by this agency,” says Director Diputado. He also directed the program coordinators of the agency to submit updates on planting, harvesting and standing crops and inventory report of buffer stocks.

El niño is a climate pattern characterized by hotter days. The phenomenon described the unusual warming of surface waters in the tropical eastern Pacific Ocean.
