“The progress of a farmer is a development of the whole community, the progress of the community is a development of the city, and the progress of the city possibly a development of the country”.

This was the message of Norberto Ouano, the Regional Corn Coordinator of the Department of Agriculture Regional Field Office- 7 during the conduct of the Field Day on Sustainable Corn Production in Sloping Areas (SCOPSA) last September 19, 2019 at Danasan, Danao City.

The SCOPSA is implemented by the Corn Program of the DA7 to improve and increase the farmers yield even in sloping areas by giving them corn seeds and fertilizer. The program also teaches soil and water conservation to increase their harvest.

According to Ma. Zea Villaganas, Provincial Corn Coordinator that the purpose of this SCOPSA is to plant in sloping areas where it needs more effort to be successful without causing harm to the nature by using organic or balance fertilization.

The program used a 3-hectare model farm in Danasan, Danao City owned by Bebe Richel Batoon. The farmers formed an association consisted now of 51 members, headed by Junrey Batoon, the son of the owner.

“We have succeeded despite of the trials that we have faced because of our hardwork and cooperation. We work together not just as a group, a team but as a family who always pray together”, Junrey Batoon said.

The farmers were very thankful to the department for their undying support for they are now harvesting the fruit of their labor and that there is now an increase of their income.

The program is a joint effort of the Department of Agriculture Regional Field Office- 7, Cebu Provincial Agriculture Office, LGU Danao City, and the Danasan Farmers Association.
