CV Farmers start receiving free hybrid rice seeds, fertilizers

With the implementation of the government’s P8.5 billion Rice Resiliency Project (RRP), the Department of Agriculture in Central Visayas (DA7) started the delivery and distribution of the subsidized hybrid rice seeds in Bohol and Negros Oriental on June 2, 2020 while delivery of fertilizer to follow soon in the respective provinces.

During the ceremonial distribution, rice farmers of Carmen, Bohol received their initial bags of hybrid rice seeds from their total allocation of 400 bags of hybrid seeds. Department of Agriculture 7 (DA7) Regional Executive Director Atty. Salvador D. Diputado bared that this week officially signalled the distribution of these interventions to the rice farmers of the four provinces in Central Visayas (CV).
He said that the delivery of the rice seeds is just on time for the wet-season cropping. “This initiative aims to boost rice production in the region and in accord with Secretary William Dar’s food security program to combat hunger especially during this covid-19 pandemic,” Diputado explained.
DA7 Provincial Agricultural Technology Coordinating Officer (PATCO) of Bohol Mr. Roman Dabalos said that for the municipality of Carmen, delivery is expected to be completed within the next week.
Cecile A. Opada DA7 rice focal person disclosed that Central Visayas has an allocation of hybrid rice seeds good for 10, 627 hectares with 31,881 bags of urea fertilizer under Expanded Hybrid. Opada added that DA7 also provides 64, 736 bags urea for Expanded Inbreed for those farmers using seeds from the Local Government Units (Province and Municipal) and those who directly purchased their seeds from other farmers, and from Rice Competitiveness Enhancement Fund (RCEF).
Farmers will receive the hybrid rice seeds and fertilizer according to the size of their farmland. For Hybrid rice seeds, 15 kilos per hectare is allocated, three bags/ha of urea fertilizer (hybrid areas) and 2 bags/ha of urea fertilizer (inbred areas).
"As of June 3, 2020, we have delivered 2,323 bags out of 10,627 bags of hybrid seeds to Bohol and Negros Oriental. Of these, 700 bags were already distributed in Bohol. Delivery and distribution is on-going while waiting for the hybrid seeds from the two seed companies, which are expected to arrive in Ubay-Bohol port on June 8. Other provinces will follow soon,” Opada added.
Bohol 3rd district Representative Kristine Alexie Tutor who attended the distribution ceremony shared that she is fully supporting Secretary William Dar’s agri-fishery initiatives for Bohol, especially in her district, while Carmen Mayor Jun Toribio joined the rice farmer-beneficiaries in thanking Secretary Dar for the various food production programs in their town.
A press release from the DA portal stated that under the RRP, the DA aims to produce an increment of more than 1.03 million metric tons (MMT) of rice, in addition to this year’s yield projection of 12.76 MMT. This is expected to bring the rice sufficiency level to 94 percent from the present 87 percent.
Diputado encourages farmers to visit their Municipal Agriculture Office (MAO) and enroll in the Registry System for Basic Sectors in Agriculture (RSBSA) to avail of the DA's interventions.
