Jagna, Bohol to produce 20,000 Ubi kinampay plantlets

JAGNA, Bohol - Mayor Joseph Ranola warmly accepted the 250 tissue-cultured Ubi Kinampay Plantlets from the Department of Agriculture-7 through Regional Executive Director (RED) Atty. Salvador D. Diputado.


Jagna is the first LGU-recipient of the P1.9 million grant from the Bureau of Agricultural Research (BAR) to finance the production of at least 20,000 Ubi Kinampay plantlets in Bohol.
Diputado said that the top quality Ubi Kinampay tissue culture takes eight months to process the plantlets.
According to the Bureau of Agricultural Research Digest, Ubi kinampay variety of the purple yam only thrives in Bohol.
Bohol is known to be the largest ubi kinampay-producing province in the Philippines.
With the support from the Bureau of Agricultural Research (BAR) and the Department of Agriculture Region 7, more researches are being conducted to enhance the production of ubi kinampay in the province.
These research projects conducted at the Bohol Experiment Station have produced products such as ubi powder, yam flour, yam chips, ubi wine, spread, and chips.
Mayor Ranola also led the planting of the Guyabano seedlings, which are part of the 540 fruit seedlings from the DA.
Diputado shared that this is part of Secretary William Dar’s Plant, Plant, Plant Program.
The Ubi Kinampay plantlets will be planted in the Ubi- growing Barangay of Tubod Monte, Jagna, Bohol.
On field at Tubod Monte, Jagna Bohol, were Mayor Joseph A. Rañola, DA7 RED Atty. Diputado, Bohol Agriculture Program Coordinator Roman Dabalos and DA 7 Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation Division chief Engr. Antonio Du.
The group conducted a planting activity for the fruit bearing trees handed from DA7.
The support shown by DA7 RED Atty. Diputado and the effort made by Mayor Rañola for his great love of agriculture specially the farmers who are also the frontliners of today's battle from covid19 pandemic were truly appreciated by the local farmers.
The members of Local Finance committee of LGU Jagna, Punong Barangay Nicanor Salarda of Brgy. Tubod Monte, Municipal Agriculturist Camilo Rizano and Staff Of the Municipal Agriculture Office were also present during the said event.
Diputado reiterated Secretary William Dar’s challenge to increase production by at least 10% which was gladly accepted by the LGU.
"A vegetable farmer later disclosed that in the many years that he had been in vegetable farming, this is the only time when they received full support in their farming activity, as he thanked the DA, Sec William Dar and LGU-Jagna for the big help," Diputado shared.
