Be responsible pet owners. This was the call of the Department of Agriculture in Central Visayas (DA-RFO7) together with the Veterinary Offices of the Province of Cebu and Cities of Cebu, Mandaue and Lapulapu, during the simple celebration of the World Rabies Day, September 28, 2020 at the DA-7 Office grounds.

The LGUs present pledged to support and collaborate with each other in the fight to end rabies.

Regional Executive Director Atty. Salvador Diputado shared that having pets like dogs and cats are good stress reliever and can make one happy, however, there are responsibilities for owners to perform such as vaccination, proper sanitation and cleanliness for the pets.

"We all know that dogs are man's best friend. They (dogs) are very loyal pets to its owners. We need to take care of them. Dili lalim ang mamuhi og mga iro ilabi na kung responsable ka nga tag-iya kay daku kaayo ni og gastos (Raising dogs are not that easy especially if one is a responsible pet owner and it is very costly)", Diputado said.

Joel Elumba, Regional Technical Director for Research and Regulation also said that raising dogs and cats gives happiness that money can't buy. He shared that every month, his food expenses for the 11 dogs and 4 cats he rescued and maintained inside the office premises would sum up to P 15,000.00.

"Kini nga kantidad wala ra ni nga value kay mohatag man ni sila nato og kalipay (The amount incurred is of no value as they (pets) in return give happiness).
This celebration is anchored on responsible pet ownership and animal welfare which we will celebrate on October 5-9.

Dr. Ana Marie Migrino, Regional Rabies Coordinator said that the region is very active in rabies prevention and control. Our LGU counterparts have expressed its strong commitment on rabies program. In fact, Siquijor Province and 5 islands in the region like Malapascua and Camotes in Cebu, Apo and Olimpia of Negros Oriental and Pitogo (C.P. Garcia) of Bohol are declared rabies free. Cases of rabies in the region are also decreasing, she said.

"We, in the regional down to local levels are in full blast of our rabies vaccination as well as the spay and neuter. As frontliners in the rabies eradication and prevention, we must unite and cooperate, inorder to achieve and eradicate rabies", Migrino said.

Diputado, in his interview with a reporter said that there's a need to strengthen the advocacy on responsible pet ownership. The objective of attaining rabies free locality, province or region is achievable with the full cooperation of the LGUs and the owners.

"These LGUs and owners play a vital role in rabies prevention. Also, it is not safe to let the dogs roam around as these will cause hazard or danger both to human and vehicles," Diputado said.

"Ayaw patuga og pamuhi og mga iro o iring ug dili mo kamao mo-atiman niini. Mas maayo pa inyo ni ihatag sa lain nga adunay pagmahal sa mga hayopan. (Don't try to raise dogs and cats if you dont know how to take good care of them, Just give it to those who are lovers of animals), Diputado said.
