The Department of Agriculture-Central Visayas (DA7) gathers today some 12 Local Government Units (LGUs) in southern Cebu to a DA-LGU Harmonization Meeting of Agricultural Initiatives to address concerns and issues as well as identify the agri-fishery needs of the LGUs.

The 12 LGUs are Dumanjug, Ronda, Alcantara, Moalboal, Badian, Alegria, Malabuyoc, Ginatilan, Samboan, Santander and Carcar.

Atty. Salvador D. Diputado, Regional Executive Director of DA7, in his message, said the activity serves as a one-stop shop, where DA7 and its attached agencies like Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), Philippine Fiber Development Authority (PHILFIDA), Philippine Crops Insurance Corp. (PCIC), National Dairy Authority (NDA) and National Meat Inspection Service (NMIS) gather under one roof to meet the LGUs so that issues and concerns regarding agricultural development will be addressed directly and at the same time provide mentorship or consultation on possible projects that are suitable in in their areas.

"This is a convergence initiative of the regional office and a two-way dialogue of the two players in agriculture for food security. This is also the start of a strong, active collaboration and partnership for the betterment of the agri-fishery sector," Diputado said.

Diputado also responded to the statement of Cebu's 7th District Representative Pablo John Calderon that whatever transpire in this harmonization, we will try to address.

The Director also requested the Local Chief Executives to prepare a food security plan for them to know the status of food sufficiency in their locality, whether there is a surplus or deficit.

He went on challenging the LCEs to enact 4 ordinances to include 1) establishment of a rain water impounding system in every household, 2) community-base fruit and vegetable seedling production, 3) recycling of single-use plastic like plastic bottles, and 4) household compost pit facility as source of fertilizers.

"If these will be put into ordinances, we are both addressing climate change and food production," Diputado said.

The event was held in Dumanjug Megadome, Dumanjug, Cebu.
