The 10-year National Agri-fishery Modernization Industrialization Plan (NAFMIP), which is aligned with the United Nation’s food systems approach expects to boost agricultural production in the NAFMIP implementation years.

Today, as the municipal agricultural officers and agriculture stakeholders gather at a hotel in Cebu City, presentations centered on crafting a commodity-systems based plan.

According to Gerry Avila, chief of the Field Operations Division, the NAFMIP recommends clustering and considers more than one commodity such as corn and livestock, rice-fish-legume and other compatible commodity combinations that are appropriate for a specific local government unit. By implementing the commodity-systems based plan, resources are pooled, thereby reducing production cost.

He added that it is vital to include industrialization in the plan as value-adding in products, augment the income of the farmers. Citing as an example, is to include the establishment of livestock auction markets and abattoirs in the plan in livestock production areas.

Annearth Maribojoc, planning and monitoring staff of the DA, cited that considering territorial strategy in the plan, is to include the concept of establishing agri-industrial parks and corridors, which are seen to pole vault the economic performance of the agriculture sector. Cited as an edge in complementing the establishment of agri parks and hubs, is the strategic location of Central Visayas as a transshipment hub.

The NAFMIP is designed to answer the longtime concern of slow growth of the agriculture sector in the country, compared to other countries in Asia, according to Elvin Milleza, one of the resource persons of the said activity. Milleza said that current research in the establishment of climate resilient villages such as in the municipality of Daanbantayan, Cebu, is found to increase a combined production of corn and peanuts by 72% and a corn and mungbean combination by 38%.
The participants, who are from the 41 cities and municipalities in Cebu are expected to input in the template provided by the central office, which will be consolidated and will form part of the NAFMIP.

The two-day workshop which envisions a food-secure and resilient Philippines, is in sync with the NAFMIP activity in Bohol.
