The Department of Agriculture’s Balik Probinsya Bagong Pag-asa program turned over 150 sacks of hybrid corn seeds and three corn shellers to the Varrons Federation of People’s Organization (VFPO) in Cabatuan- a conglomeration of 11 farmer-associations in Danao, Bohol.

Balik Probinsya focal, Fabio Enriquez, handed the interventions to Mayor Jose Cepedoza and to the chairman of the VFPO, Manuel Benito, yesterday at the mayor’s office. Present also in the ceremony was Sangguniang Bayan member Geoffrey Cepedoza.

According to Enriquez, the project aims to modernize, industrialize and professionalize the agriculture sector. Enriquez added that the DA’s intervention will complement the agriculture programs initiated by the provincial government of Bohol.

In a tete-a-tete, Benito highlighted the federation’s demonstration farm which showcases seven location-specific hybrid corn seeds aimed to lure more farmers to plant the said varieties to achieve high yields.

It is noted that the Bohol provincial government led the Advanced Rural Transformation Corn Technology 100 program which promotes farm mechanization and the use of hybrid corn which targets to yield 100 cavans of shelled corn per hectare. The municipality of Danao belongs to the clustered corn towns identified by the Provincial Agriculture Office.

To complement the provincial initiative, the DA distributed to the farmers’ federation, hybrid corn seed varieties that have a potential yield of 15 tons per hectare.
