Siquijor expects to boost egg production after the Department of Agriculture 7- Special Area for Agricultural Development (DA7-SAAD) program distributed 21 modules of layer chicken to six associations in the province, this month.

The SAAD layer chicken project aims to increase egg production, and increase farmers’ income—a twin goal of the current DA administration. The project also expects to generate employment in the locality.

According to Mae Montecillo, SAAD focal, each module consists of 48 heads ready-to-lay chickens, complete with cage, totaling P60.5T per module.

The Paliton Vegetable Growers Association, from the Municipality of San Juan, Tulapos Marine Protected Area Association (TUMPAAS) from the Municipality of Enrique Villanueva, and Cang-allas Communal Gardening Association (CCOGARA) from the Municipality of Larena, received three modules each, while the Cantabon Eco-Tourism Association, Kinamandagan, and Lico-an Siquijor farmers’ associations received four modules of layer chicken, 40 bags of feeds, eight packages of egg trays, and two shovels, worth more than P300T.

To prepare the associations to go into agribusiness, each was given a digital egg weighing scale and a wheelbarrow. The members of the associations who will be running the business will undergo specialized training on egg production in March this year.

The official website of Siquijor reveals that layers and native chicken number less than 600,000 on the island.
