DA7 lecture mentors Lapulapu teachers for the establishment of urban gardens through Gulayan Sa Paaralan Program

Created on Monday, 18 April 2022

Teachers who attended the lecture on high–value crops today at Lapulapu City will trickle down their learning to the 1,400 senior high students of the Mactan National High School to be applied in the establishment of the Gulayan Sa Paaralan Program (GPP) this year.

Lapulapu, a coastal city, prioritizes fisheries over crops due to its sandy topography and its rich marine resources. But the Department of Education Memorandum No. 293 series of 2007 which supports the hunger mitigation initiative of the government is the instrument for the island to produce high-value crops on the school premises.
According to Philippine Statistics Authority data, Lapulapu’s population growth is expected to double in 14 years which had a population of more than 350,000 in 2010. The DA calls on local governments to partner with its food security program.
The GPP ensures the continuous supply of vegetables for the school-based feeding program and other feeding programs.
The lecture on the establishment of the GPP which is attended by 20 teachers is part of the observance of the high-value crops week.
