Some 23 participants from the local government units of Central Visayas were trained in food safety at a hotel in Cebu City this week The responsible agency under the OneDA program for training LGUs, the Agricultural Training Institute 7, spearheaded the said training which aims to disseminate the necessity of food safety from the farm to the table.

According to the World Health Organization, 600 million people all over the world become inflicted with foodborne illnesses after consuming unsanitary food, and of these, at least 420,000 die every year. The latest food poisoning incidence in Central Visayas was recorded in an event in Cebu last May 24 this year where all victims were released safely from a hospital.

Bryan Ybañez, a resource person of the training, said such illnesses could be avoided if the food handlers practice food safety. Without proper management and food safety control, foodborne diseases and injuries could occur.
It is noted that the Department of Agriculture Regional Field Office 7 has been actively training farmers on Good Agricultural Practices (GAP), teaching them to adopt sustainable production technologies, and applying the integrated approach in vegetable and fruit production.
GAP is seen to close the unnecessary use of chemicals on crops which eventually affects the environment and human health, according to studies.
