Selected farmers in Mantalongon, Dalaguete, Cebu, receive a livelihood package from the Department of Agriculture, today. According to AMIA focal, Dr. Fabio Enriquez, the program envisions establishing resilient communities to counter the effect of climate change.

To provide a resilient livelihood to these farmers, the DA7s Balik Probinsya program distributed goats, swine, seeds, and fertilizers to 200 farmers in six farmer associations in Dalaguete.

Marcelo Dichon, one of the beneficiaries of the program who worked in Manila for several years, decided to venture into agriculture in his hometown for good saying, “there’s no place like

home,” while Maria Concepcion Ufana, from Mantalongon, was grateful enough to the DA for giving her a chance to start a living.

The 1987 Philippine constitution underscores the role of the state to protect the rights of subsistence farmers and fishermen as well as to provide appropriate production technology, and marketing assistance among others.
