The Department of Agriculture-Regional Crop Protection Center (DA-RCPC) 7 conducted a two-day back-to-back training on vegetable and banana production in Maria Siquijor, recently.

According to Gregolito Bunado, agricultural program coordinating officer, he aspires to see the 60 participants apply the climate-resilient technologies they learn from the training to cope with the demand for the commodities despite environmental challenges.

Based on the situation analysis reported by the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist, the consumption level for vegetables is higher compared to the current sufficiency level which is only 77.43 percent.

HVCDP 7 report officer Priscilla Soriano said the sufficiency level for Central Visayas is at 50% with squash having the highest production and yield.

Pre-typhoon Odette data of the DA7 shows that banana has a higher sufficiency level compared to vegetables, and of the three banana varieties in Siquijor, cardaba has the highest production with 11,518.17 metric tons, followed by latundan with 2,109.85 metric tons, and lakatan with 93.74 metric tons.

The DA7 sees the need to rehabilitate the devastated bananas by capacitating the farmers to produce quality crops.

The participants were trained on good cultural management, pest and disease management, preparing a production plan, and pesticide management.

According to RCPC staff Christopher Paran, good cultural management, early diagnosis, and cure of pests and diseases are keys to higher production.

The field activities completed the learning module for the participants.
