The Department of Agriculture Regional Field Office 7 (DA-RFO7) recommends balanced fertilization for rice farms in Bohol.

Based on DA observation in the field, farmers are now producing rice for consumption and not for commercial purposes due to the high cost of farm inputs.

To mitigate the global challenge of the rising cost of farm inputs, a DA7 team composed of technical staff recently conducted a briefing to initiate a demonstration on the effectiveness of balanced fertilization in Alejawan, Jagna.

According to Felix Tubiano, OIC of Bohol Agricultural Promotion Center, the team from the soils laboratory conducted a soil sampling consultation with the farmers to identify the lacking nutrients in the soil.

It is noted that soil nutrient is a major factor that determines the yield of crops, and rice crops face the greatest risk as the price of fertilizers continues to soar.

According to Tubiano, the balanced fertilization strategy (BFS) will recommend the use of cost-efficient fertilizers, combining organic and inorganic to sustain rice productivity.
He added that with the right combination, the cost of farm inputs will be lessened with expected greater yield.

The briefing intends to prepare the farmers for the establishment of a demonstration farm that will utilize a combination of organic and inorganic fertilizers or a combo fertilizer that is site-specific nutrient management for improved efficiency of rice production in Jagna, Bohol.

Tubiano said that based on the results of the soil testing, a recommendation on the right fertilizer combination will be applied to the identified experimental plots.
