The Department of Agriculture Regional Field Office 7 conducts a training today in Cebu city to lure participants to engage in urban and peri-urban agriculture, at a hotel in Cebu City.

In a message, OIC-Regional Executive Director Joel Elumba said that the move to add urban and peri-urban agriculture is based on the policy direction of the DA to increase food production and lessen the logistic costs to soften the impact of global concerns such as food security, climate change and the rising costs of fuel and other inputs.

RED Elumba added that urban agriculture is a rapidly growing segment of the farming industry and improves the land area used for agriculture, enhancing food security.

Topics discussed are, the production of high-value crops, cuniculture, and bamboo production, among others.

It is noted that high-value crops can create a secure and profitable future for urban dwellers as greens can be grown in a short period with less investment but with a big profit.

Bamboo production is also seen as a sustainable endeavor as it matures quickly and does not need replanting aside from the fact that it converts a high volume of carbon dioxide into oxygen.
