Negros Oriental farmer associations (FA) engaged in banana production and were affected by super typhoon Odette last year, received some 300T banana plantlets from the Department of Agriculture-Central Visayas (DA7). Mary Ronville Aba, DA7's High Value Crops Development Program (HVCDP) focal person of NegOr, the distributed banana plantlets were part of the Quick Response Fund (QRF) interventions.

Under the QRF, the province has an allocation of 300,000 banana plantlets which will be distributed to 12 Local Government Units (LGUs) of Vallehermoso, Guihulngan City, La Libertad, Tayasan, Ayungon, Bindoy Manjuyod, Mabinay, Bais City, Santa Catalina, Valencia, and Pamplona.

The LGUs will then distribute the planting materials to the identified associations.

Junmil Quiliope, banana farmer and president of the Sacsac Farmers Association in the municipality of Manjuyod, who owns a 1.5 hectares of banana plantation shared that the typhoon wrecked his farm which was his source of livelihood. He was greatly affected, felt despaired and was a torture on how to re-establish his farm again.

With the 500 pieces of banana lakatan plantlets he received from the DA's QRF, he is positive that his farm will rise again and will give him better income with the quality of planting materials provided. He said a kilo of banana lakatan has a better price in the market.

Another banana farmer recipeint, Arje Acosta, also from Manjuyod, said he lost around P 10T weekly income from his 3 hectares banana plantation due to the typhoon. However, he said the DA boosted his hope for his bananas after receiving some 200 pieces of lakatan banana plantlets.

Aba added, the interventions will help farmers recover or regain their losses after the devastation of typhoon Odette.
