To prepare for the Phase 2 implementation of the Special Area for Agricultural Development (SAAD), the Department of Agriculture in Central Visayas (DA-7) and DA-CALABRAZON (DA-4A) collaborated for the conduct of a three-day Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) Workshop held in Tagbilaran City, Bohol. The workshop will help equip the project implementers of the SAAD Phase 2 with theories and skills in conducting on-site field activities using the PRA tools.

A PRA is a holistic approach with the use of tools that will be administered to the communities to help them assess, validate and identify the needs of the project beneficiaries which will serve as basis in identifying appropriate interventions and livelihood.

During the workshop, implementers were exposed on the varied PRA tools, to include the agro-ecosystem mapping like village map, social and infrastructure map, enterprise map and village transect map; timeline and trend analysis; cost and return analysis, resource flow and institutional diagrams.

The PRA immersion was held in barangay Cambagui in Sevilla, Bohol to some 35 villagers composed of 24 farmers from Cambagui Farmers Association and 11 women of the Cambagui Women’s Association.

Verbena Saren, one of the PRA respondents of the women’s association, said the tools led them to draw or recommend solutions to their identified problems like the high cost of farm inputs.

Sevilla Mayor Juliet Dano, encouraged the farmers to continue farming and be the lead agent of change for a better Sevilla.

The municipality of Sevilla is now included in the SAAD Phase 2 implementation.

Dr. Gerry Avila, the field operation division chief of DA7 reminded the project implementers to be keen to the needs of the community and to continue learning on development and social work aspects.
