Teachers in the elementary and secondary schools handling Home Economics and Livelihood Education (HELE) and Technology and Livelihood Education (TLE), respectively from Districts 1, 2 and 3 of the province were oriented on the establishment of GPP, a school-based food production program which will support the supplementary feeding program of the school. It also aims to showcase school vegetable garden and inculcate among school children the importance of vegetables to one’s health.

The retooling training was held in La Libertad for District 1, Tanjay City for District 2 and Dumaguete City for District 3. Among the topics discussed were nursery seedling management, urban agriculture, farming system and pest and disease management in vegetables.

According to Juliet Tuala, GPP and National Greening Program (NGP) Coordinator of the Department of Education-Negros Oriental Division, a memorandum of agreement (MOA) was signed between DA and DepED for the implementation of the Gulayan sa Paaralan. She also said that GPP is also a component program of the National Greening Program for implementation in the schools.

Susana Kintanar, Regional High Value Crops Coordinator said that vegetables seeds and some garden tools were already distributed to concerned Municipal Agriculture Offices (MAOs) and DepEd’s GPP District Coordinators in preparation for the opening of classes. (Cheryl M. Victoria/DA7)
