Agriculture to suffer biggest budget cut

The DA would suffer the biggest budgetary cut among state agencies in 2014.  Under the plan set by the DBM, funds for the DA, including those for projects, would go down by P16.2B, from P64.5B this year to P48.3B next year.  Of that reduction, P14.3B would come from the office of the DA Secretary, whose funding would go down from P56.6B this year to P42.3B in 2014.

Peasant bloc dares Aquino to repeal IRRI immunity

Militant peasant groups Kilusang Magbubukid ng Pilipinas (KMP) and the Resistance and Solidarity Against Agro-Chemical TNCs on Thursday dared Pres. Aquino to repeal a Marcos-era decree that gives the IRRI immunity from Philippine laws and jurisdiction.   They said that IRRI is guilty of plundering farmers’ rice diversity around the world and to the death and illness suffered by rice farmers due to their promotion of poisonous pesticides and chemicals.
