Photo Release:  The DA will spend P200M this year and P300M in 2014 to encourage more farmers to plant hybrid rice varieties, double the area planted from last year’s 164,787 hectares to 388,000 hectares in 2014, and contribute to attain rice self-sufficiency by end of 2013.  DA Sec. Alcala said the DA will continue to promote private and public hybrids, particularly those developed by the PhilRice, during the 1st National; Hybrid Rice Congress.

The NFA has broken its palay record but it still has to abide by its mandate to purchase 10% of the total annual palay output to influence the rice of the staple.   NFA said it bought 2,244,142 bags of palay for the first quarter of 2013, 38.22% higher than its quarterly target of 1m695,900 bags.
