The government plans to initially allocate P100M for a program that aims to prop up the productivity of farms planted to rice, corn, and high-value crops all over thePhilippines.  Dir. Gen. Agriculture insurance coverage hits P10.63B

Agriculture insurance coverage almost doubled as of November last year amid strong typhoons visiting the country, the PCIC said.  Insurance coverage reached P10.63B for the period January to November 2012, from P5.37B posted during the same period last year.  For 2013, the DA has given P183.771M for premium subsidy insurance for 98,828 palay and corn farmers while the DAR contributed P1B for 224,036 Agrarian Reform Beneficiaries.

Drop talks for protection of rice traded under WTO

ThePhilippinesshould no longer seek an extension of the special protection on rice traded under the WTO, according to a study released by government think tank Philippine Institute for Development Studies (PIDS). Instead, PIDS said thatManilashould negotiate a tariff that offers equivalent protection to its producers.  According to the BAS, thePhilippines’ paddy-rice production could reach almost 18MMT in 2012.  The DA is keen on wiping out rice imports this year.  The government is yet to formally announce the volume of milled rice it will authorize for importation in 2013.

The 2013 has been declared the National Year of Rice, with the theme “Sapat na Bigas: Kaya sa Pinas!” through Proclamation 494, signed by Pores. The House Committee on Aquaculture and Fisheries has been urged to look into five-month fishing ban being imposed by BFAR that affects more than 100,000 fishermen in Western, Central andEastern Visayas.  Anakpawis partylist Rep.
