The Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (RDRMMC) has passed a resolution requesting Pres. Aquino to declare a state of calamity in areas of Western Visayas adversely affected by typhoon Quinta.   The initial consolidated report prepared by the RDRRMC showed that damage wrought by the typhoon to rice, corn, high-value crops especially vegetables and livestock have reached P62M, the bulk of which is accounted for by the staple crop valued at P43M.

The DA is seeking a budget of P600M from the DBM for projects aimed at mitigating the adverse effects of the developing El Niño phenomenon.  This will be on top of the approved P74.1B budget of the DA for 2013.  DA Sec. Alcala said the impending dry spell was not anticipated during the creation of the 2013 department budget.

BAS cites that white corn farmers were the biggest gainers as their share in consumer peso went up from 76% in 2011 from 56% in 2010. The share of paddy-rice producers in consumer peso also climber 44% last year from 43% the previous year.

The massive devastation caused by Typhoon Pablo to plantations in several provinces inMindanaois expected to put a dent on the government’s target farm output growth of four to five percent for 2012 although positive growth can still be expected for the year.  In the first nine months of the year, farm output grew at a slower pace of 1.93% from a growth rate of 4.74% in the comparable period last year because of continued slowdown in fish production.

Creation of a national coconut industry development coordinating council pushed

AAMBIS-Owa partylist Rep. Sharon Garin is pushing for the creation of a body that would coordinate and unify efforts of coconut-producing local government units in formulating and implementing policies and programs affecting the coconut industry.  Garin sought for the passage of House Bill No. 6755 which calls for the establishment of the National Coconut Industry Development Coordinating Council (NCIDCC).
