DA allots P200M to prop up PHL seaweed production 
The Philippine government is allocating as much as P200M to prop up seaweed production in its bid to wipe out raw seaweed imports in one-and-a-half-year’s time, the DA said.  The country usually imports anywhere from 80,000MT to 100,000MT of raw seaweed annually, almost from Indonesia.  DA Sec. Alcala said the government wants to encourage seaweed farming on the provinces of Sulu, Basilan and Tawi-tawi.  (With photo: DA Sec. Alcala opens P40-M Iwahig irrigation project)

PHL starts trial exports shipment of fresh fruits, veggies to Singapore
The Philippines will embark on a trial shipment of a variety of vegetables and fruits to Singapore next week.  The trial shipment will involve ‘a few boxes’ of pineapples, bananas and squash.  They want to see the quality of the products that will be shipped and if they approve it, then that’s the time discussions on the volume will be finalized.

DA Sec., Alcala said that the country’s farm output data will be released next week (January 24), instead of today as DA-BAR director Romeo Recide would be on official trip today and he wanted the data to be official so he would not release them without Dir. Recide.

Mangrove protection project in Quezon
Officials of Tanggol Kalikasan-Timog Katagalugan (TKTK) led the launch of the ‘Mangrove Protection Project’ in Bgy. Castanas in Sariaya, Quezon over the weekend.  DA Sec. Alcala and Vice Gov. Kulit Alcala are the major supporters of the Mangrove Protect in Sariaya and other towns in Quezon.

Tobacco dust good for aquaculture 
Research undertaken by the NTA showed that tobacco dust battles not only head lice but also decimates snails that inhabit fishponds and fish cages.  As a molluscicide, it acts swiftly to protect milkfish and its eggs from predatory snails and other creatures that exist in ponds and fish pens.

Fishermen can now sustain their aquaculture practices after the NTA discovered and introduced that tobacco is not only a major ingredient for cigarettes, but could also use as organic fertilizer and can address the degradation of fishponds due to highly toxic chemicals at a demonstration farm in the municipality of Sto. Coco oil seen growing 12.3% in ‘12 
Philippine coconut oil (CNO) exports may grow by 12.3% to 925,000MT in 2012 from 823,381MT in 2011.  The growth will come from the recovery in the production of copra.  Philippine coconut production ion copra terms may reach 2.487MMT this year from 2.062MMT in 2011.

Local researchers in Baybay City, Leyte have developed a kit to detect abaca bunchy top virus that has ravaged plantations in Bicol, Eastern Visayas and regions in Mindanao. The kit was developed to enable farmers and field workers to detect virus even before symptoms become visible.
