DA Proposes $627-M Phl Rural Devt Program

Alcala (middle, top photo) announces that the Department of Agriculture is proposing a six-year, $627-million Philippines Rural Development Program (PRDP) that will initially cover six regions (4A, 4B, 5, 6, 7 and 8) in Luzon and Visayas, and those under the current Mindanao Rural Development Program Phase 2 (MRDP2), during a July 31 press briefing, at the DA-BSWM, in Quezon City, as part of the ongoing 11-day 8th World Bank (WB) review mission, attended by DA and WB officials, Mindanao local government officials, and project beneficiaries (below). The PRDP will be bankrolled by a $500-M loan from the WB, which also funded the MRDP2, a $120-M counterpart from the Philippine government and beneficiary local government units, and a $7-M grant from the Global Environment Facility (GEF). During the briefing, Secretary Alcala thanked the Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID) for providing a $3-M grant to the DA-MRDP2 to enhance the capabilities of Mindanao LGUs to package and implement agri-fishery, infrastructure and livelihood projects.  Also shown (from left) are MRDP2 Director Lealyn Ramos, WB officials Felizardo Virtucio and Carolina Figueroa-Geron, and AusAID Philippines governance adviser Sam Chittick.
