Global Warming Tackled in the First RAFC Summit
The causes and effects of global warming was the central topic tackled during the first Regional Agricultural and Fishery Council (RAFC) Summit held recently in a Mandaue City hotel.
PAGASA Regional Head, Oscar Tabada who was the resource person on global warming, said that, Venus has become the hottest planet on the solar system due to its 95% carbon dioxide. What happen to Venus might also happen to our planet, if we keep on doing human activities -- such as burning of plastics that might cause the breakdown of the stratosphere, he said. Tabada added that when the stratosphere is broken, we are no longer shielded from the ultraviolet rays of the sun that might cause skin cancer.
DA – 7 HOLDS INFORMATION CARAVAN ON EL NIÑO MITIGATION
The DA is currently wrapping up in Cebu Province the last leg of the regional information caravan on El Nińo preparedness.
Undertaken with the DA attached agencies, private sector, and the Regional Agricultural and Fisheries Council (RAFC), the caravan earlier took off from Canlaon City in Negros Oriental where the city’s executive, Mayor Jimmie Jaime Clerigo, committed to prepare his city’s populace against the weather phenomenon. There were six cities and 22 municipalities covered in the Negros Oriental leg of the information caravan. The second leg undertaken at Bohol Province, covered the city of Tagbilaran and 46 municipalities.
Region’s first Organic Chamber faces challenges ahead
The Regional Organic Agriculture Chamber (ROAC) faces great challenges ahead.
This was revealed by Director Angel Enriquez, Regional Executive Director of the Department of Agriculture (DA) Regional field Office 7 , during the first Regional Organic Agriculture Chamber assembly recently held at a hotel in Mandaue City, Cebu. Director Enriquez , encouraged the group to finalize the roadmap on organic agriculture to guide the OA stakeholders in preparation of future challenges.
DA TURNS OVER P105.4 M PROJECTS
DA Secretary Proceso Alcala recently (July 25) turned over projects worth P 105,427,689, covering among others P38,811.468 first tranche release of farm-to-market roads for 11 Cebu municipalities; P388,920 for second tranche release to the municipality of San Remigio and P1,021,548 for third tranche release for San Fernando and Talisay City under the Grassroots Participatory (BUB) Program of government implemented by the Department of Agriculture.

Crisanto Patay, 59 years old, of San Juan, Siquijor, was one of the participants of the training on organic agriculture about a decade ago. Implementing and continuing his learnings is another thing for Crisanto. In fact he was only one of the few who truly advocated and practiced organic agriculture after the seminar.
His investment started only with 15 African Nightcrawlers which was granted to every participant during the training. Initial harvest of vermicast reached 40 sacks, the returns of which he used to build a storeroom or ‘bodega’.
International Exhibit escalates Region 7 agribusiness
Region 7 escalates agribusiness opportunities in the recent 50th Southeast Asian Food Market Place (SIAL) at the World Trade Center in Manila. According to Gerry Avila, Agriculture Marketing and Agribusiness Division (AMAD) Chief of the Department of Agriculture (DA RFO 7), the event showcase priority investment areas of the region.
Among the priority commodities of Central Visayas are mango, coffee, cacao, highland and organic vegetable and cassava production. For the livestock and poultry sectors, priority investment areas include swine breeding and fattening; poultry, dairy milk, and goat meat production; the establishment of ‘triple A’ slaughterhouses; cold storage for fruits; meat, coffee and marine-aquaculture processing.
